THYME

Uses

Thyme is a powerful antiseptic for the lungs and therefore useful for chesty colds with a bad cough, especially a dry one.

Combinations

Thyme combines well in tincture form with liquorice, elecampane and ground ivy for the treatment of chest infections, especially if the cough lingers on for weeks.

How to take

Thyme is best taken as tincture or as a thyme and liquorice syrup (for precautions see page 101).

Refer to Chapter 26 if you want to make your own thyme and liquorice syrup, otherwise you can purchase it directly from practising herbalists who run their own apothecaries.

Dosage

Adults: 0.7-1.5ml diluted with some water, 1-3 times a day, tincture strength 1:2; or thyme and liquorice syrup, 1 teaspoonful 2-5 times a day.

Children (2-16` years old): adjust the adult dose downwards, depending on the age of the child – see Chapter 6.

OPTIONAL HERBS

There are many herbs that can lower the temperature, take away the chill and soothe muscular aches and pains. You can customise your treatment according to your symptoms. For instance, if you have a cough, add one or two herbs that are specific for coughs. Some of these may be growing in your garden, in which case it makes sense to use what you already have.

ELECAMPANE

Uses

Elecampane root is a traditional remedy for chest infections. It has a disinfecting action on the lung tissue as well as being an expectorant. It can be used for any type of cough of recent origin, or to get rid of a lingering one.

Combinations

Elecampane works well in combination with ground ivy, liquorice and thyme or elderflower (see the mix on page 107).

How to take

As tincture.

Dosage

Adults: 1-2ml diluted with some water, 2-3 times a day, tincture strength 1:2.

Children (2-16 years old): adjust the adult dose downwards, depending on the age of the child – see Chapter 6.

GROUND IVY

Uses

Ground ivy belongs to the group of herbs that helps restore specific tissues to their healthy state. Ground ivy has a reputation for healing the lining of the respiratory tract. It provides a supportive treatment for coughs that drag on and cannot be shaken off.

Combinations

Ground ivy mixes well with the tinctures of elecampane, thyme and marshmallow root or liquorice root to treat lingering chest infections (see page 107).

How to take

Ground ivy is best used as tincture in combination with antimicrobial herbs.

Dosage

Adults: 1-2ml diluted with some water, 2-3 times a day, tincture strength 1:2.

Children (2-16 years old): adjust the adult dose downwards, depending on the age of the child – see Chapter 6.

LIME TREE FLOWERS

Uses

Lime tree flowers are a traditional remedy used to reduce fever. This is a warming herb, which will induce slight perspiration if your body temperature is above normal. It will also help with restless sleep, which often troubles sick people.

Use it for a moderately high temperature (between 37oC/98.6oF and 38oC/100.4oF).

Combinations

You can combine it with elderflower.

How to take

Either as tea made from dry flowers or as tincture.

Dosage

Adults: 5-10ml diluted with some water, 1-3 times a day, tincture strength 1:5; or 1 cup of warm infusion, 1-3 times a day.

Children (2-16 years old): adjust the adult dose downwards, depending on the age of the child – see Chapter 6.
